Question: Which Autism Treatment Should We Start With?

Which autism treatment should we start with?

Answer: While many treatments have the potential to help, some have the potential to cause negative side effects. Certain pharmaceuticals, for example, have been shown to be dangerous under specific conditions.

It makes sense to start with treatments that (1) are offered at low or no cost by your personal, local, regional or federal resources; (2) are likely to have a real impact on your individual child's special set of needs; (3) are unlikely to have any negative impact on your child's overall health. Such treatments are likely to include speech, occupational and physical therapies and some form of specialized in-home or school-based program that includes social and behavioral elements. Once you have the basics in place, you can start research and choosing any additional therapies you feel are appropriate.
