Chelation, the use of various drugs to remove metals from the body, is a controversial treatment for autism. Practitioners believe that thimerosal, a mercury-based vaccine preservative, is responsible for the onset of autism. By removing mercury from the body, they hope to begin reversing the metal's harmful effects.
