What Does it Cost to Raise a Child with Autism?

By August 29, 2013

Follow me on:

dollar signDo you have an extra $2.5 million in your back pocket?  According to some sources, that's what it'll cost you to raise your child with autism!  Of course, common sense tells us that very few people have anything like that kind of money -- so how do they manage?  The reality is not quite in synch with the headlines.  While some people really do spend enormous sums out of pocket, many are able to (or choose to) utilize services, programs, and opportunities that make raising a child with autism relatively affordable.

How do you pay the costs associated with autism?  Have you spent beyond your means, or have you found ways to meet both your child's needs and pay your bills?

How much does it cost to raise ANY child? While the latest figures for a (presumably) NT AB kid are estimated at $250,000, does that include college? Post-grad? Organic diet? Sleep-away camp? Similarly, with ASD, does the cost+ reflect the average across the spectrum? Does it reflect parent wages & the impact on career trajectory? How about the off-label and alternative-med treatments (consider: your source is Autism Speaks)?
