"Autism Yesterday" Video Supports Biomedical Treatment of Autism

Tuesday June 30, 2009
Autism Yesterday is a half-hour documentary produced by J.B. and Lisa Handley and Generation Rescue. The Handleys, for those who don't know them, are the parents of a child with autism and the founders of Generation Rescue, a non-profit dedicated to the biomedical treatment and cure of children with autism.

Early on, the Handleys were "the" spokepeople for the biomedical movement. Today, Generation Rescue is described as "Jenny McCarthy and Jim Carrey's Autism Organization," and the website is covered with images of the stars. A photo of Jenny with a shopping bag carries the slogan "let's go shopping," and ads for various site sponsors cover the right-hand side of the front page.

In a sense, "Autism Yesterday" represents a return to the early, non-commercial days of autism activism. It's a beautifully-produced half-hour documentary featuring families facing autism and -- at least according to the film -- curing their children. The website for the film is absolutely simple: no jargon, no marketing message, no links, no images of big-eyed children.

The message of "Autism Yesterday" is that autism is caused by ingredients in vaccines and can be cured through a variety of biomedical interventions including but not limited to supplements, special diets, chelation (removal of heavy metals from the body), etc. The theory presented is that government agencies, conspiring with large pharmaceutical companies, know the dangers posed by vaccines but have chosen to bury their knowledge.

Interestingly to me, virtually all of the families presented in the film (and in most materials supporting biomedical treatment) are described as perfectly normal until they received their vaccines. According to the anecdotes, the children immediately became seriously ill, and never recovered either physically or developmentally until they were treated according to the DAN! (Defeat Autism Now) approach to autism intervention.

Fever, stomach upset, bowel problems, and other gastrointestinal illnesses are not a part of the definition of autism. Some studies suggest that children with autism are more likely to develop these problems -- but many studies suggest just the opposite. Why do these particular children have significant medical issues? So far as I'm aware, no one knows.

The medical mainstream is adamant that there is no connection between vaccines and a huge rise in autism diagnoses -- while the biomedical community is equally adamant that there's a conspiracy to harm our children. What that means is that while some will see the Handley's, their video and their support of the biomedical movement as a boondoggle -- and potentially harmful to children and their parents -- others will see them as crusaders, speaking truth to power.

Generation Rescue keeps talking about recovery, but they fail to tell you that any child with autism will progress biomedical or not. It’s sad, when a child is asked about the autism he ‘had’, he stated it’s poison. How sad for other children to hear that. I wonder if he has a peer in his class with autism, if he’ll have that same poison thought about him? There was a mom who was a special education teacher. She said what they are taught, if that was the case and such doom, why teach special ed kids at all? “You only have a little window of time” a few said for hope of recovery and a child who can be mainstreamed. I do not like the idea that is presented this is the way you get that.

The video was ok, however if thousands as they say are recovering, we’d all be doing this same intervention. There are plenty parents who went this same route and seen no recovery but they suggest to keep at it. It could be that while you’re keeping at it, the child is progressing on their own. This video is all about vaccines and doctors not knowing a thing. “Accountability” is what GR said himself about vaccines. This video is about fault, talked about many times on this video. GR said “10’s of thousands” on this protocol, and if so many are recovering I ask again, then why is autism such a big deal if there’s recovery?? The interesting thing is, is that mercury (Thimerosal) isn’t in vaccines now, is that why the video is called Autism Yesterday? Since Thimerosal isn’t in childhood vaccines as they once were, what is this video doing for present day vaccine education?

The message I more got is admitting ‘they’ did wrong, give an apology.

I disagree. I have a child who was diagnoised at 2.5 with autism. We were told a very poor prognoises, he would possibly never speak, be potty trained or play the way other children do. It was awful. I started going on the internet and found out about biomedical treatment, diet, chelation and supplements. By now my son was already in the tradional speech, ot and later aba, however it wasn’t until biomedical that we saw the real improvement. He was finally able to absorb what they had been trying to teach him. Today my son is 5, he plays, he laughs and sings, he talks more than any other 5 year old I know, he’s potty trained and most importantly he’s happy. He is not 100% recovered but he is close.
Help for autism is not just a window, that window of time is just an expression because any person who is sick with almost anything will do best if the problems are corrected quickly, however that is not to say that others can not heal or improve after the ideal timeframe. Autism is so complicated, and how it was once described does not give justice to what it is really like.
Some children do improve on their own, some get way worse. If you talk to families alot you will find that the families doing the best are the families that have used a combination of biomedical and therapies. It depends on what exactly is wrong with the child, no two cases of autism are the same, just like diabetes or cancer, some is so damaging to a person and some are barely affected. You have to look at each case and develop a complete plan for recovery. and what I find most from families that say they did biomedical and saw nothing is that they did not stick with it, or they were looking for a silver bullet usally. They did not do the diet 100%, or they say they did biomedical but they only tryed chelation. It can be as easy as diet changes for one child or as difficult as years of trial and error. My son was years of trial and error, we have tryed a good amount of treatments, and I am so happy they worked! But at the end of the day I am most happy that we gave it our all, we did not quit on him, I would never regret losing my house, job and years of my life even if he had not gotten better, but I would regret giving up on him and never knowing what my son’s voice, laugh was like, I would never forgive myself for not giving it a 100%.
And the reason its such a big deal even though we are figuring out how to help our children is because we can prevent it…we have lost years of our lives, we have lost our home, our child’s childhood, they have had to endure things that a little child should not have to do, that they don’t have to do. The reason we are screaming so much is we don’t want it to continue to happen.
Mercury is still in some flu and Dtp vaccines. Also it is not just the mercury, there are dozens of chemials in vaccines that are toxic, take a look. And the amount of vaccines have increased at an alarming rate, getting 30 something instead of 10. getting so many at once, and that the same flu shot you get would be the same one a new baby would get, the one size fits all, that doctors are vaccinating babies when they are sick, there is so much more to it. Educate yourself on it, you will be very surprised at what is happening.
