Autism, Awareness, and April Fools Day

Tuesday April 1, 2008
Yesterday, for the first time ever, Tommy (age 11) decided he would like to play some April Fools jokes. His idea, to put a whoopie cushion on Dad's seat, was absolutely classic - and he seemed to totally get my idea of putting salt in the sugar bowl. It's a huge jump forward for him: it means he's aware that others will not know what he knows, and that the results can sometimes be very funny indeed! This is what the autism pros call "theory of mind."

Tom has also become aware of the fact that he's autistic - and that autism often means "doing the same thing over and over again and thus driving people crazy." He's now aware that he DOES do the same thing over and over again, that it DOES drive people crazy - and that autism makes a great excuse. Hmmm. More theory of mind? Or is this more a political thing?

And speaking of autism, awareness and politics: today is the first day of Autism Awareness Month, and the day before World Autism Awareness Day. In a prior post, I mistakenly said that Autism Speaks is actually responsible for World Autism Awareness Day; in fact, that is not the case. The United Nations General Assembly approved and sponsored the day - and Autism Speaks leadership was present at the announcement.

This month, autism will be everywhere. Naturally, I can't list every event right here on my blog, but very fortunately Lenny Shafer of the online publication The Shafer Report runs a calendar which lists a tremendous number of local events. Whether you're interested in attending an event or listing your own, now is the time to subscribe.

How are you celebrating this odd combination of April Fools and Autism Awareness? Are you ready for the big event(s)?!

This Autism Awareness Month will be spent becoming aware that my son has autism. We’ve spent six months waiting for this appointment, and I’ve pretty much come to terms with the diagnosis that I haven’t yet received.

Well, you have it better than me. My son still doesn’t like April Fool’s jokes and he informed me first thing this morning, I better not do any on him!

At math home work time, when he wrote a wrong answer, he yelled out “April Fools!”. Oh brother!

Today is my brother’s birthday, and we have been long time jokers in my family. Hard to back off such fun due to my son not liking it!

Well,I have become very much interested in Autism, since i have an 18 year old son that was diagnosed with Aspergers only a year ago. He was previously diagnosed with ADHD which seems to be the “cure-all” diagnosis for what is not understood. Now that he is going to be graduating in June, I am absorbing as much information as I can to see that he gets the help that he needs. My problem? Connecticut doesn’t have any programs for Autism…….at least none that are affordable.
