Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) as a Treatment for Autism?
Wednesday December 5, 2007
In recent years, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (the same treatment that's used to cure the "bends" in deep sea divers) has received attention as a possible treatment for autism. While there's been a fair amount of media interest in the approach - and quite a few practitioners have set up HBOT clinics to provide treatment, the research is inconclusive.
Find out more about HBOT for autism (including links to studies). Or share your own experiences - pro or con - with HBOT as a treatment for autism!

I’d like to try it, especially since Jalen had lack of oxygen at birht and suffers from mental retardation in additin to this PDD diagnosis.
Hi Cynthia,
You may want to try an oxygen nutritional product. I have used it many times and it simply is a “barometric chamber in a bottle!”
I go from 92% oxygen level tested with an oximeter to 99% within 30 min. Give it a try! It’s surely cheaper than a chamber visit!
I thought “oxidative stress” was a “problem” in autism? So why the heck cause more “oxidative stress”?!?!??!!
And of course given that hyperoxigenation is a KNOWN CAUSE of seizures, it seems like a mighty stupid thing to do to a population *known*for* lower seizure thresholds.

“Doctors question benefit of hyperbaric oxygen therapy for autistic children”
It is illegal in the US for Hyperbaric Chambers to be used for autism treatment. Aside from that, it has not been shown by any study to actually work as a treatment for autism.
The knee-jerk reactions from the supposedly skeptical people always amuse me. Where’s the skepticism when discussing conventional medicine? Cancer, diabetes and autism rates are through the roof, just to name a few. What causes these? It’s the medicine and the food. Studies have proven food additives and pesticides to be poison and vaccines to medically useless. But JAMA doesn’t publish these studies, so they must not be true, right?
What studies are you referring to on the uselessness of vaccines? I haven’t read them.
How rude some people are- shooting something down without trial or proof! My son is Autistic, and I have read a lot of promising research regarding HBOT for Autistics. It’s not harmful to your body, less than any medication you could put a child on! I’m definitely trying it for my child. People shouldn’t judge or dismiss attempts at bettering someones health.
Hey, I’ve got some snake oil to sell you guys.
My 4 year old son has autism and we just started him on HBOT. After 3 sessions he is already starting to speak more and started to do some imaginative play. We have used nutritional supplementation for the last year and that made a very big difference but we thought “what do we have to loose by trying HBOT” so we did and I’m a believer in it now. We will continue to use it and if our son continues to show improvement, I’m going to figure out some way to buy the unit so we can use it at home instead of traveling out of State to where we can get his current treatments.
