What Made You Seek an Autism Evaluation for Your Child?

Actualy, my grandson was 2 1/2 at the time. As a nurse,I've done homecare with small children with Autism, I was not entitled to their diagnoses because these children were not my charges. It's obvious now. My grandson was having issues with food/constipation/insomnia/separation anxiety/behavior/"stims".

I came across an article in a Time magazine about Autism, and said, "my grandson has Autism" and cried.

With State insurance, he was dianosed 2 1/2 years later.

How Did the Diagnostic Process Work?

It didn't work at all. We had to work it. In the meantime my daughter got 'birth to 3' involved afer being dismissed by my grandson's first Pedi that turned out was a Diagnostic M.D. She missed or ignored my grandsons symptoms and told (not ordered) hearing tests for him the day before his diagnstic exam, hat never happened. 3 y.o.

Luckily, my best friends neice went to school with a now practicing homeopathic physician that specializes in Autism.

Her intro of supplements had him speaking after one month.

He was 5 yo at that time. He is in mainstream 1st grade with a full time para and speech theapy. He now uses full sentances. (Last month or two) This is his 4th yearin school

Advice

  • Resarch. Get pro-active in your childs recovery. Diet and suplements. Have him or her tested for allergies. My grandson is allergic to egg yolks. A no-no for most vaccines.

How We Found the Resources We Needed

Talk to everyone you met. You never know who or what they may know. A lot of fmilies are affected by Autism.

The care you get is hit or miss. Let your school know tnat you know you child's rights to a appriopriate education.

Get and stay involved.

What We Would Do Differently

I'm pretty sure I still don't know how to get a diagnosis in timely fashion. Early intervention is best.
