An Alternative Perspective: If Autism Is Caused by the MMR, What Are Appropriate Treatments and Preventive Measures?

Question:

Is Dr. Wakefield or Thoughtful House anti-vaccine?

Answer:

No. The researchers and clinicians at Thoughtful House are searching for answers to the biological origins of childhood developmental disorders. One area of research involves determining if there are children with a genetic predisposition which makes them more vulnerable to adverse reactions to vaccinations. If so, we need to identify those children and offer them a safer vaccination program.

Question:

What might be an appropriate treatment for a child whose autism is caused by this issue?

Answer:

First, children need to have an appropriate examination by a physician experienced with treating autistic children, including testing to determine the extent and severity of GI disease. In conjunction, workup and treatment directed at correcting their immune system abnormalities is imperative. Components of a comprehensive treatment regimen include supplying appropriate nutrients for normal immune functioning, supporting the detoxification pathways, and breaking the inflammatory cycle. We feel that the best results are achieved when a child receives intensive, high quality ABA therapy along with medical treatment.
