Having a child on the autism spectrum heightens our appreciation for small triumphs. As our kids learn to use the toilet, speak first words, make friends or achieve their goals, we need to share and celebrate. Here's one inspiring story from Donna Cooper, mother of Jonathan, age 5. Jonathan was diagnosed with severe autism at 18 months. This letter originally appeared in the "Floortime" listserve, and is reprinted here with permission from the author.

Hello Friends,

NO! I AM NOT PREGNANT!!

But I do have some exciting news. I hope you don't mind a little "brag" here.

First of all, Jonathan is feeling better. He had Scarlet Fever, for those of you who don't know and has been sick sick sick for about 10 days now. But, he was feeling up to, and requesting an outing, so I decided that we needed an outdoor excursion. We took a picnic lunch to the playground.

I hate to admit it, but it has been a while since I've taken my child to a playground.

I was blown over by his social skills!! He interacted with the other children and adults. Was kind to the younger children, and made a friend named Clayton while were were there. Jonathan would invite the other kids to come play with him and used his imagination as he climbed a house sculpture Jungle Jim....he said he was a super hero looking for someone to rescue.

He then invited a woman and her toddler to take a "trip" on a pretend car and as they were seated, he reminded them to fasten their seatbelt and get ready for a bumpy ride.

After her son and my son ran off to the slide she remarked at my son's "advanced" social skills and friendliness. I laughed with joy, and told her of my son's amazing changes in the past 3 years. I told her how just a few years ago he didn't know people existed and had no desire to interact or communicate. Turns out her cousin has autism, and she was shocked that my son did too.

We still have our battles, but this was an "oh so sweet" day. One I'll remember for a long, long time.

Hope you all are doing well!

Donna
