Separating the Vaccine Questions

Monday April 24, 2006
I just saw yet another article stating that the MMR (Mumps Measles Rubella) vaccination may be a cause of autism because it contains mercury in the form of thimerosal, a preservative. THIS IS NOT A CORRECT STATEMENT OF THE CONCERN. In fact, as readers have helped me to discover, the MMR vaccine does not and never did contain mercury.

Here, in the words of the CDC Website, is the issue with the MMR vaccine: "The MMR-autism theory is based on the idea that intestinal problems, like Crohn’s disease, are the result of viral infection and can contribute to the development of autism. The theory has its origins in research by Wakefield and colleagues (1989; 1990) which suggested that inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is linked to persistent viral infection."

Does this theory hold water? That is a matter of intense debate, and will be the topic of at least one upcoming article on this site.

And... if the MMR vaccine doesn't contain mercury, then what's the deal with mercury-based thimerosal and autism? Tune in tomorrow for a short overview of that issue!

(1) Monica says:

The MMR does not have to contain thimerosal to add to the problems these kids face. My daughter had a bad reaction (17 days post vaccination) to the MMR, high fever, screaming, arched back, and a strange bulls-eye rash that the ER doc attributed to coxsackievirus (hand foot & mouth disease). Shortly after this my daughter began grinding her teeth, and spinning in circles for hours on end. She now has gastric problems so bad that she is scheduled for a biopsy of her GI tract. She suffers from Autistic Enterocolitis. Whether the MMR caused the autism is debatable, but she sure has every symptom that Wakefield describes. The doctors used to think I was making this all up, until I brought them her poopy diaper, filled with whole spaghetti noodles from the previous night’s dinner. We finally get to see a DAN doctor on Monday.

Monica-I’m so sorry to hear about your daughter, that is jsut heartbreaking.
At the risk of sounding like a loony…there is some evidence that the CDC is being censored. They are at least being woefully underfunded. Don’t rule out anything on the basis of one study. Good luck with your diagnosis, Gabriela

(3) Paul Shapiro says:

I really donot understand the hard position that the CDC/FDA take insisting that the combined MMR is the only vaccine to be used. That is in spite of the fact they they have never run any definitive long term tests of the combined mixture. Let the parents and Wakefield be damned. The wake call will come when their children are affected.

(4) Lisa Jones says:

I do not believe the CDC or anyone else about the mercury , they are covering up and most polital parties are taking money from the pharacutical companies to keep there mouths shut ,my daughter was born healthy and normal and once recieved the vaccine MMR our whole lives changed….
The truth must be told.
We need to fight for our children , and may god have mercy on the devils that are making the injections to be given to our children , come on 1 out every 166 children .
Lets really think hard about this.

(5) Janet says:

My autistic 12year old son had a blood test that shows positive for mumps, measles, and rubella antibodies. The doctor suggested mega-dosage of Vit A.

He also had a blod test that shows a compromised immune system with IVIG problems. The doctor wants to do gamunex — very expensive!

Any thoughts?

(6) Veronica says:

I can’t seem to find the correlation between the MMR vaccine and autism. My son is autistic, and yes, he didn’t show the obvious signs until he was over 18 months, however, he was born in 2001 and the mercury was out of the vaccines at that point. I think we need to stop pointing fingers at vaccines and get to the real cause of the problem.

(7) sonya says:

Veronica, It’s sounds like you havn’t read all of the literature or you’d understand that it’s not the mercury in the MMR that’s the problem. MMR never had mercury. Respectfully, may I suggest the book, ” What you Doctor May not Tell you about Children’s Vaccines” by Dr. Stephanie Cave. I hope that you’ll get some insight from this book.

(8) monica says:

Actually, although my daughter was born in December, 2003, her first 2 DTaPs (given in 2004) had thimerosal. The flu vaccine still does have thimerosal.

(9) Michelle Collins says:

You don’t want to rely on the CDC for your
information. They’re the ones who keep
vaccilating between adamantly denying that
vaccines containing thimerosal cause autistic symptoms, and then conceding that
some children may be more vulnerable to these toxins than previously studied. When they hire people within their own organization to do the research and investigating, you will not get an
honest answer if there are millions of dollars to lose by admitting their fault.

(10) Tom says:

Sonya, speak for yourself. Maybe chemistry class again will help you understand the dangers of mercury and not change the initial data backing up the concluding fact there was mercury in vaccines for intended reasons prior to realizing this breakthrough. I had reaction to MMR, causing encephalitis menegitis in the brain, causing my first seizure, which will never be cured in my lifetime. I almost died at just age 1. It’s much too dangerous to be insensitive of this issue. I agree with CDC denying this. For Monica, sometimes symptoms don’t show up right away, and takes days or weeks to be noticed. I encourage all people to learn more about such hidden illnesses to understand such people don’t intend to scare or harm anyone. People with conditions need a social life also, not to be isolated.

(11) Tonya says:

You people who sit here and go by directly what the CDC says are a bunch of mental cases and I’m sure you are the pathetic sad parents who go by what your doctor tells you too! First of all, the CDC is of course going to say that it doesn’t cause any harm they are working with the government and the RX companies and it is ALL about the money! They will not take fault for it. I personally know 6 people whohave children who were all completely normal happy babies until they were between 15-18 months and got that hell forbidden MMR and now ALL have major problems like the others on here. So to all you uneducated parents who rely on your doctors advice only and the APA and the CDC you should listen to the mothers of these children and read all of the books and watch all of the movies about the hundreds of thousands of cases of these children! WAKE UP!!!!!!!

(12) shannon says:

Tonya, I don’t think you need to call people “pathetic”. I’m a pediatric nurse and see that most parents care deeply for their children and do what they think, at the time is best for their children. I have two young children myself. I do have concerns with the shots, however I think it may lie more in genetics. Not every kid reacts negetively to vaccines, therefore it probably is something more compex within the body…not just the shots. Also, autism normally shows up around 12-18months, anyway…I do believe breaking up the shots may be a better answer than 4-5 at a time!!
