Give and Get Advice on Toilet Teaching

Tuesday March 21, 2006
It seems that long after other peoples' kids are into big-kid underpants, we're struggling with pull-ups and giant diapers. Parenting magazines have a load of good advice, but none of it seems to work.

When ordinary parenting advice isn't enough, it's time to consult SuperParent -- those moms and dads of special needs children who have been there and done that. One of those is Terri Mauro, About Guide to Special Parenting. Terri offers a step-by-step guide to the popular No Pants approach for your consideration, along with information about toileting readiness and sensory issues.

But so many About readers also qualify for the role of SuperParent that I thought I'd turn this question over to you -- in the Forum. Do you have any suggestions for this parent?:

My son Erik just turned 6 and was diagnosed with autism 2 years ago. Our huge obstacle is potty training. He had been trained to 2 years for urine, but we are battling bm's. I"ve done star charts, sticker charts, etc. We've tried everything! He's always battled constipation issues but hasn't been constipated for a long time. About 1 hour after he's sleeping, he'll go in his pull up. Erik does not wake up! Any suggestions??
