An Autism Mom's Songs in the Key of Parenthood

From , Former About.com GuideMay 8, 2011

Songs in the Key of Parenthood

When you turn on the radio, you hear lots of songs about love - the joy, pain, pleasure, remorse, sleepless nights, sweetness, and longing of love!  But just about all of these songs are about romantic love between a man and a woman.  That's wonderful, but what about the love between parents and children?  I guess that's not in style for pop music.  So, I often entertain myself re-writing the words to popular songs.  In case any of these songs entertain you, I'm sharing...

When my son was about three...

To the tune of "My Guy"  (Mary Wells)

Nothing you could say

Could tear me away

From my guy, my guy

Nothing you could do

Cause I'm stuck like glue

To my guy

He doesn't know how to ta-alk yet

He barely knows how to wa-alk but

No other little face

Could take the place

Of my guy.

~~~
To the tune of "Someday My Prince Will Come" (Snow White)
Someday my son will talk!
Someday my son will talk!
He is almost talking now!
I am sure that he'll learn how!
~~~

To the tune of "Come a Little Bit Closer" (Jay & the Americans)

Come a little bit closer

You're my kind of boy

So big and so strong,

Come a little bit closer,

'Cause I want a hug,

And I am your mom!

~~~
We were lucky that our first two kids slept well, but our third didn't sleep through the night until age three and a half.
To the tune of "Can't Take my Eyes off of You" (Frankie Valli)
I love you baby,
But if it's quite alright
I want you baby
To sleep all through the night!
I NEED MY SLEEP, baby
To make me feel alright
Tomorrow.
My pretty baby,
You are my heart's delight
Please don't say maybe
Just close your eyes up tight
And stay so lazy
Until the sun shines bright
Tomorrow
~~~

To the tune of "Early in the Morning" (Gap Band)

Got to get up early in the morning

To give you another bottle

Got to get up early in the morning

To give you another bottle

~~~
About wishing you could do a million treatments
To the tune of "If I had a Hammer" (Pete Seeger and Lee Hays - the Weavers)
If I had some money
I'd buy a hyperbaric oxygen chamber
An infrared sauna
And a water ionizer
We'd get some more lab tests!
And even better supplements!
We'd try every single treatment that we've
Read about
A-a-a-all over the interne-et
Oo-ooo-oo
~~~

Some songs don't even need a rewrite - just excerpts.

"Baby Baby Don't Cry" (Smokey Robinson & the Miracles)

Baby baby, don't cry!

Baby baby, here's why!

Love is here

Standing by

Love is here

Standing by!

~~~
"I Love You for So Many Reasons" (Bloodstone)
I love you
For so many reasons
I love you
For all seasons!
I love these! So creative, thank you for sharing them! I was just thinking about how Billy Joel’s We didn’t start the fire would make an excellent frame for all of the terminology in the autism world… You’ve inspired me!
