This is so exciting!! I am NOT the expert you are looking for, but my son’s behaviourist just lent us an iTouch with a few apps to see if he would take to using it. We’re stumbling along, trying to learn to ‘tap’ and not press the icons, but he really loves playing with it!! Please keep us posted on the expert search!! It has such potential for special kids!

I am a tech geek whose 2.5 yr old son with autism knows his way around the iPad/ iPod touch very well. I would be very interested hearing more people comment on their child with autism interacting with the iPad. My son’s matching game skills have definitely improved with the help of iPad apps. He use to watch the purchased videos, but now has no interest in watching the cartoons via iPad-he goes straight for the “educational apps”. Good or bad TBD, but the iPad has sure caught his attention more than any other toy/book in our arsenal.

My son is 12 and has autism with severe language issues, but is very intelligent. He has been using a Dynavox communication device for about the last 5 years, but just recently switched to an IPod Touch with the Proloquo 2 Go app and he LOVES it!! He is very adept at spelling and sentence structure and loves how lightweight and portable this device is. We also got a case with built in speakers that amplify the volume on the IPod. It is also so much more socially appropriate than a larger, more bulky device. He is one of the “cool kids” on the block with his new IPod!! Another HUGE benefit is the cost difference!! While we loved his Dynavox and it served him well over the years, we can’t say enough good things about the IPod!

Our daughter is 22 and may be beyond the age for the apps you want reviewed. However, after reading several articles on the use of iPads with younger children, I feel very confident that there will be apps for older teens and young adults (even if I have to build them myself). We don’t have an iPad but are working with my daughter’s support team to come up with a plan.

Say hi to Pete for me.

My Son is 11 years old, has had an ipod touch since they came out for entertaiment purposes and absolutly loves it he knows how to navigate it really well. Now we have the ipad its sooo much more convienient becuz the screen is bigger,we use for entertainment and learning which is the best, i use to take my laptop everywhere to do certain programs that now are similar to some apps.

My 11 year old daughter with autism uses the iPad as if it were an extension herself. She easily types searches to bring up educational videos that we have downloaded onto the iPad, getting to other kid friendly websites is also a breeze (she used to do this on a regular pc but this is much more intuitive to navigate.) She loves the touch interface, and it is perfect for long trips in the car. I have NOT yet downloaded any autism specific apps yet and it is still very useful. We also use it as a reward for completing basic chores we have designed for her (it works :) ).
The apps I see out there seem more geared towards younger children on the spectrum but I am still searching. Let me know if you know any that would benefit a preteen/teen.

Oh, by the way, by 79 year old dad who was computer illiterate is a natural at it too. (hhmmm, a forum on iPad uses for the elderly??) lol

Cheers!
