Best of 2008 for the autism community - your ideas requested

Tuesday December 30, 2008
Here it is - the end of 2008 - and as always, it's been an eventful year in the world of autism. Controversies rage. Funding is scarce. And yet, people with autism and the folks who love them continue to do great things, achieve beyond expectations, and express themselves through words, music, science and art.

I've been trying to put together some "best of" articles (probably coming next week), but before I do - I'd appreciate your thoughts. What, in the following categories, do you feel are the best of the best from 2008?

    Books:

  • Best Practical Guide to Autism for Parents
  • Best Practical Guide to Autism for Adults on the Spectrum
  • Best Memoir by a Parent
  • Best Memoir by an Adult on the Spectrum
  • Best Children's Book About Autism

  • Best New Website About Autism Treatments (mainstream)
  • Best New Website About Autism Treatments (alternative)
  • Best New Science Blog About Autism
  • Best New Personal Blog About Autism (Parent)
  • Best New Personal Blog About Autism (Adult on the Spectrum)
  • Best New Social Site for the Autism Community (parents)
  • Best New Social Site for the Autism Community (adults on the spectrum)
  • Products:

  • Best New Autism-Related Product (for adults on the spectrum)

Thanks so much for your thoughts and insights!

This is an easy one for me. The best book of the year by far (and in my mind tragically neglected by our community) is “Autism and its Medical Management”, by Michael G. Chez, M.D.

You can read my review on the Amazon site, but suffice it to say that whether you agree with all, some, or none of the views of this leading pediatric neurologist who specializes in ASD, he doesn’t duck the controversial issues. Many may find his sharply critical view of mainstream medical treatment for autism spectrum disorders surprising, given that it comes from one of “their own”.

Chez offers practical advice to bridge the communication gap between 2 groups, professionals and parents, who it seems rarely speak the same language when it comes to medical treatment for the wide range of ASD subtypes.

This site of course contains many articles of interest and well written too.
New web sites, they’re popping up every day so I stick with tried and true tested sites.

Over all, best is hard to find, since what one finds helpful and the best, another may not.

May not fit your criteria but in the stages of early diagnoses I found Pervasive Developmental Disorder by Barbar Quinn and Anthony Malone very helpful because it was well written by a nurse. Also it’s a dip in book so if you want information about one element without having a read a whole tome it was very useful.

Also, All Cats have Asperbers by Kathy Hoopmann.

Then Just take a Bite by Lori Ernsperger and Tania Stegen Hanson [I would never have survived without that book]

Lastly, Visual Strategies for Improving Communication by Linda A Hodgdon and RDI by Steven E Gutstein…….I’ll stop now as I could go on and on and on…..

Best New Social Site for the Autism Community

By far the new web site just finishing beta testing. (100% of a persons donation goes to the organization of their choice)

http://www.causecast.org

Is a winner. It combines the power of youtube, myspace, facebook, celebrity endorsements, blogs, and charities all in one site. The synergies are just starting to surface. I just posted this…

What Cause are you fighting for?
Human Rights…Autism
Children’s Safety…Autism
Health…Autism
Environment…Autism
Youth… Autism
Elder care..Autism
Community…Autism
Human Race… Autism

No matter your cause. The results of your work make an impact. Thank You!
