Your Help Requested: Will Doctors Diagnose Autism From a Distance?

Even in greater Philadelphia there are just a few qualified developmental pediatricians experienced in diagnosing autism. How much tougher is it to find a qualified doctor in a developing country? I just received this letter from a father in Moldova:
My name is Victor. I am from Moldova. Our boy 4 years old used to name thing when whe was 3.5 Now he doesn't utter a word, just sounds. He doesn't use sign language whereas he doesn't immitate anything.

We have no center in our area concerning this problem. I read that it might look like autistic behaviour.

Would you be so kind to watch or advise us somebody who is competent, in your opinion, to watch our boy using web camera to determine his disorder.

This seems like a perfectly reasonable request - and I would imagine that it should be possible to get at least a preliminary diagnosis of autism through a combination of telephone interviews, medical records review, and videotape or webcam. Such services would be certainly be invaluable to families in isolated or less developed areas around the world.

I have done a bit of digging to see if I can find such services available through a reputable US autism agency, but so far have found no specific information. Do you know of anyone who does (or would) help a family to evaluate their child for autism at a distance?

Thanks so much for your help!

This would bring up many questions. Since there are many things that can mimic autism, one would need to consider those factors prior to a diagnosis. I think it would be most difficult to make a diagnosis via a web cam or video as well. Without knowing other medical issues or causes, if it is true autism the larger question would be what sort of interventions are available in Moldova? Most times a diagnosis is not required to seek intervention or start some. The more important thing is to be sure it’s not something else, and the interventions.
