My New Blog on Autism and Homeschool

Sunday October 7, 2007
While this website is dedicated to public information about autism, I am now embarking on a journey that I'm sharing through a separate personal blog. Teaching Tommy will document our family's journey as we embark upon homeschooling our 11 year old son, who was diagnosed with "PDD-NOS" (in essence, high functioning autism) at age three. Please join me on the journey!

Thank you for the invitation. My son is 9 and high functioning hyperlexic, in public school. We are in the fourth school and have found a jewel. I thought about home schooling for years. I think you are very brave and your son and daughter are lucky to have parents who love, enjoy and cherish them.

Lisa,
I homeschooled my 9-y.o. Aspie for two years with the help of special ed tutors. It was a wonderful experience and we met a great network of friends in the homeschool community. Late last year, though, my Mom was diagnosed with lung cancer and, simultaneously, our main tutor (a doctoral candidate and certified teacher) started a new private school that he is now attending with our McKay Scholarship (voucher for special ed students). This is working well, too, but the time at home with him was a great bonding experience and I would do it again, if necessary. I would highly recommend that you join a local support group and look into cooperative teaching opportunities with other parents. Also, if your state has a homeschool convention, you must attend it – you’ll learn so much.

I don’t have a child with autism (I was just doing research on the site), but I am a homeschooling mom, and just wanted to offer you a ‘high five’. This is our second year now and I have to say that I’ve really enjoyed the time together. I’ve gotten to know my son, his strengths and weaknesses really well, we’ve bonded wonderfully as a family, and I don’t have to worry about him falling through the cracks at school. I hope you really enjoy it, and that your son thrives. I agree with Joy, though; it’s so much easier if you get connected with other homeschooling parents! (More fun, too.)
