National Autism Association Offers Real Help for Parents of Children with Autism

Wednesday June 13, 2007
An interesting press release crossed my desk today. Sent from the National Autism Association, the press release announces a new service: marriage counseling for couples coping with autism. Having heard from so many couples who are having a tough time managing their relationship in the wake of an autism diagnosis, I thought this sounded like a great idea.

While I haven't personally tried the service, from the description it sounds helpful. Not only does it make available counselors with experience working with families with special needs - but it also provides that counseling by phone, at the couple's convenience. And not only does it provide the counseling - it also makes available need-based grants to PAY for the counseling!

On a related note, the National Autism Association's Family First program also offers grants to support families in need of funding for therapies and other autism-related services. This one of the only family grant programs I've ever heard of. Kudos to the National Autism Association for its progressive thinking!

Need more information about couples, marriage, and autism? Here are just a few, featuring responses to reader questions from Drs. Rob Naseef and Cindy Ariel, specialists in serving families with special needs:

If you do make use of the National Autism Association's offerings - or have found similar programs or grants - please do share your experiences and recommendations!

I have knowledge of a man with 2 children with Frigile X Syndrom. The oldest, a boy of about 8, has Autism as well. He is severe. The little girl is almost 2 and so far has been diagnosed with only fragile X. This man is out of work, and his wife of 10 years has left him. His 82 yr. old grandmother who lives with him has suffered a stroke and is in the hospital at this time. I would like to find out if there is a financial aid group, government or otherwise that he can be clued into. He is beside himself with grief over his marriage and overwhelmed with his responsibilities. Thank you for helping me out.

Hard luck seem’s to follow more often when one is down on his luck. I wonder if this man has called the Social Security office in his home town and explained he has two children of fragile X..one severe autism and no job. Seem’s he should get disability for both children..also medicaid..and food stamps. If you don’t ask, you don’t get. All agencies were very helpful to my daughter. A phone call to Soc. Security and I believe they notify Medicaid for health care and food stamps can be done on internet in your home state.
